Are your appliances experiencing problems? If so, you aren’t alone. The following items are some of the most common appliance problems we encounter day in and day out. If your appliance is experiencing any of these symptoms, give us a call to schedule a service appointment. While some of these issues may seem like a minor inconvenience, most of them can result in more serious problems down the road if they aren't properly addressed.

Refrigerator not cooling.
This issue is the subject of one of the most frequent service calls we receive.  Most owners have already determined the unit must be low on freon; however, this is rarely the case. Usually the inability to cool is due to an airflow problem. There are several possibilities for the problem, some of which include fan issues, obstructions to the air flow vents, a cracked or worn out door seal, or compressor weakness or failure. In many instances the compressor may be fine, but just needs some attention.

Defrost not working.  
Not only is manually defrosting your refrigerator an inconvenience, but it is also an indication of other problems with your refrigerator. By the time you notice frost or ice built up in your freezer, the entire coil system behind the scenes is normally frozen over. This ice buildup can break parts and crack the plastic walls of your appliance.

Water leaking inside the unit or onto the floor.
Leaking water may be coming from either your water supply or a clogged drain. When the drain is clogged, the water can run into your appliance instead of into the drain pan. Nothing but water should be able to get to the drain pan.

Not making ice or dispensing water.  
Not being able to utilize the automatic ice and water dispenser is not only an inconvenience, but an indication of more serious issues with the appliance. If you’re not getting any ice, the problem could be as simple as an inexpensive cog replacement. If there is no water present and you have good water supply to the refrigerator and a good filter in place, you may have an inlet valve that isn’t functioning properly.

Unusual noises.
Unusual noises, such as clicking and squealing sounds, are often the result of evaporator or condenser fans starting to go out. Metallic pings or taps can be indications of compressor problems. If you notice more than the quiet hum of a fan motor and the routine dropping of ice from the icemaker into the ice bucket, you should contact us ASAP.  A part that is about to go out can result in additional problems if not resolved quickly.

How often do I need to change my water filter?  
Filtered water provides you and your family with great tasting ice and water. The key to continue having the best tasting and cleanest filtered water is to follow a regular maintenance schedule for your fridge filter. If your refrigerator’s “change filter” light is on, or if your automatic water dispenser is s‑l‑o‑w‑l‑y dispensing water, your filter replacement is probably overdue for a change. Electric oven not heating properly, or one or more stove top burners not working.  
If you notice your oven isn’t heating properly in the bake or broil modes, you may have a heating element or receptacle that needs to be replaced. If your oven is cooking food too fast or too slow, you may need a technician to adjust your oven’s settings. Many ovens have digital displays, and sometimes a faulty control panel may be causing the problem.

Self-cleaning mode doesn’t work.  
There are safety controls that can prevent the automatic cleaning mode from working. If this happens, you should contact us ASAP.

Gas oven won’t light.  
Most modern gas ovens have electronic ignitors that replace the pilot light; however, there are still ovens that use pilot lights. Safety features prevent gas from flowing out of the valve if there is nothing to light. If the ignitor is bad, has a bad connection, or the pilot won’t stay lit, you should contact us ASAP.

Error code on digital display. 
An error code will give you an indication of what is wrong with your oven IF you can interpret the code. Sometimes the codes are supplied in the owner’s manual - other times they may be located inside the oven control area (NOTE: sometimes the codes aren’t available to the consumer). If your oven is displaying a code indicating a repair is needed or if your oven displays a code you don’t understand, you should call for service.

Water leaks.

Water leaks of any kind can be damaging to parts within the machine and to your floor. Over time, water leaks can cause additional damage to other parts of the machine. Pumps, hoses, and valves all need to be checked. Professionals recommend changing your washer hoses every three to five years, and they should be checked periodically for leaks.


Unusual noises.

Unusual noises can result from something as simple as pocket change in the tub to transmission problems. Before calling a service technician, carefully check for foreign objects in the tub and make sure the machine isn’t vibrating against the wall or dryer when spinning. If nothing obvious is detected, you should contact us ASAP.  Small noises left unresolved usually result in louder noises and more costly repairs.


Washer won't spin or agitate.

There are different causes for machines not completing all cycles. Faulty door switches, pumps, and controls can all contribute to a machine not spinning or agitating. Several parts work together to make the cycles perform properly. 


Washer doesn’t fill or drain properly.  

Water is an essential element to clean clothes. If the water is not filling or draining properly, you may have problems created by a clogged or faulty screen, water valve, pump, or switch. Before calling for service, make sure the hot and cold water valves to your washer are turned on.

  

Unpleasant odor.  

If your front-load washer has an unpleasant odor, know that this is common. This mildew odor comes from mold growing inside your machine, caused by residue and bacteria. Here are a few tips that will help eliminate the cause and remove the smell. Following these suggestions can prevent mold from ever starting in new front load washers, and will fight existing mold in smelly front-load washers.  


-Use the recommended amount of HE (high efficiency) laundry detergent. Non-HE detergents will cause suds, and suds leave behind residue inside your machine.


-Use a hot water wash for your last load of the day. Washing in cold water saves money and energy, but cold water does not kill bacteria, and leaves behind more residue than hot water washes. To be sure the bacteria in your machine is gone, once a month run three-quarters of a cup of regular bleach through your empty washer on a normal cycle with hot water.


-Clean out our drain pump regularly. If your washing machine has a filter/trap inside the pump, your owner’s manual will explain this procedure. Not allowing debris to build up inside your pump will eliminate one of the major contributors to mildew odor.


-Clean your washer once a month. There are several products on the market for cleaning your machine.

Unusual noises.

Unusual noises can be anything from a warped roller to belt problems. A squeak, rattle, or grinding sound will almost always get worse if left alone.


Dryer does not shut off.  

There are several factors that can contribute to a dryer not shutting off. Thermostats, thermal fuses, timers, and circuit boards all work together to cycle a dryer.  


Dryer takes too long to dry clothes. 

This is probably one of the most common service calls we receive for dryers. Many consumers assume their element may be out; however, most of the time the dryer may not be venting properly.  When this happens, it can cause lint to build up and obstruct proper airflow. When lint is built up in the vent hose, this is often an indication that there is also lint build up in the dryer itself. Lint can cause your dryer to work harder and increase your utility bills. It is also flammable and can start a fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association’s website, the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. That is why it is crucial to clean your lint filter after every load and to regularly have your dryer serviced. Gas odor when operating the dryer.  

Obviously, no one wants to take chances when gas odors are present. Turn off the gas valve and immediately call for service any time you smell gas from an appliance.



Water leaking.

Water leaking is one of the most common reasons for a dishwasher service call. From the time the water enters the dishwasher to the time it drains out of the unit, there are multiple places for a leak to develop. If you notice water leaking from your dishwasher, call immediately for service. Not only is a water leak an indicator of an appliance problem, but it can cause significant damage to the surrounding area.  


Unusual noises.

Unusual noises can normally be identified as electrical, mechanical, or water related. Before calling for service, carefully check the interior of the dishwasher for any loose items that could be causing a noise. Manually spin the spray arm over a load of dishes to determine if it could be hitting something during the dishwasher’s operation. If you hear an odd noise coming from your dishwasher, try to determine which cycle you hear it in. This can help the technician properly diagnose and repair the problem.


Doesn’t fill or drain properly.  

If your dishwasher isn’t filling or draining properly, there may be water pressure issues or your pump might not be fully functioning. The problem may be something as simple as an object hung in your dishwasher’s pump.  


Dishwasher doesn’t clean dishes.

Microwave doesn’t come on at all.  
A blown fuse can trip a breaker, so it’s important to check your breaker box before calling for service. Also, if a door safety switch isn’t activating, this can cause the unit not to run.

Microwave runs, but doesn’t heat.  
This is usually an indicator of magnetron, safety fuse, or electronic control board issues.  If the appliance is making a loud buzzing sound, there is a faulty electronic component.

The turntable doesn’t spin.  
The turntable is turned by a motor with a plastic cog attached, and the motor is controlled by an electronic control board.  If your microwave’s turntable isn’t spinning when the unit is running, there may be issues with any of these components.

The vent doesn’t work on an over-the-oven microwave.  
There may be issues with the vent fan motor or fan control switch.

The ice maker doesn’t make ice or doesn’t make enough ice.  

Making ice only requires two ingredients: water and freezing temperature. Believe it or not, the refrigerator’s water filter can affect your icemaker’s ability to produce ice; however, there are other factors that contribute to this problem. Ice is small or malformed.  

This problem is more than likely a water issue. Sometimes the components can crack or break causing weird ice shapes, small cubes, and even leaks into the freezer.


Unusual noises.

Ice machine isn’t making ice, dropping ice, or ice is too wet or thin.  

There are several factors that go into the production of ice. Preventive maintenance is crucial to ice production. Plus, if you could see the interior components of an ice machine that hasn’t been thoroughly cleaned, you’d definitely skip the ice. How do I request service on an appliance that is covered under warranty?  

In most cases, the customer will have to contact the warranty company to request service. Since we are warranty authorized service providers for most manufacturers, and many home and extended warranty companies, customers can request our company to receive the warranty dispatch. However, due to recent exceptions due to the pandemic, we are able to assist customers in requesting service for some warranty companies. If you contact us, we can gladly assist you with setting up service or advise you on contacting your warranty company.


What information do I need to request warranty service?

Most warranty companies require you to provide your appliance's model and serial number (located directly on the appliance), proof of purchase/delivery, and the buyer's contact information. In most cases, it is the customer's responsibility to provide their proof of purchase - and we may require a copy of that document in order to file a warranty claim.


What kind of warranties do you provide for appliances you sell?

Since we offer a variety of used, new, and scratch & dent appliances, warranty terms also vary. In addition, we are now able to offer (for an additional fee) extended protection plans through Safeware. Please ask us about your warranty options when purchasing an appliance from us.
